Areas we Cover
Most of our members are based in Worthing, but we cover all areas in West Sussex, including Littlehampton, Arundel, Chichester, Durrington, and Bognor.
HAVE A QUESTION? Want to Join our Team?
All of our members are volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering your time to help wild birds, please get in contact via email or Facebook.
We are open to volunteers from all walks of life. If you are able to do some things on this list but not others, don't worry! We would still appreciate your help and can work together to provide the best care for the birds.
Some of the things you can expect as a volunteer are:
🪶 Going out and assessing fallen chicks, seeing if they need a vet, can go back in the nest, or need to be taken care of temporarily. We can provide information leaflets to help you with this.
🪶 Returning a chick to its nest. You may need to be comfortable climbing a ladder for this.
🪶 Transporting birds between vets or rehabilitation centres. This can be local, or in some cases it may be as far as Hailsham, where the Bird Aid sanctuary is.
🪶 If a bird cannot be safely returned, we may ask if you can keep it safe temporarily. This involves keeping it warm and fed. You may also need to quarantine a bird for 3-5 days before taking it to someone else. NOTE: Quarantine is necessary as of March 2023 due to the outbreak of avian influenza (bird flu). If the sitation changes, quarantining may not be necessary.
🪶 When keeping a bird overnight, a shed or bathroom will be fine. However quarantining a bird for several days requires an outside area where the chick can exercise safely. We recommend a puppy pen with a cover.
🪶 Releasing birds into the wild when they are ready.
Do not worry if you cannot do everything on this list. We appreciate the different circumstances of our volunteers and hope that we can utilise everyone's different strengths. We also have a WhatsApp group where you can recieve fast advice when you need it.
Our members are all volunteers and offer their help for free. Depending on donations, we can usually offer renumeration for fuel costs if you have to transport a bird somewhere. We can provide some equipment such as carriers and nets but always appreciate people who can donate these.
